Tell us about yourself...
Hi I am Jessica! I currently live in Aurora Colorado with my husband, 2 kids, 3 dogs and 5 chickens. I am the owner and artist behind Photo: Art By Jessica. I am a storyteller and lifestyle photographer. I find photography so inspiring, I love how so many people can look at the exact same object and see it completely differently. I try to keep my photography simple and organic. I am not afraid to shoot in full sun and often embrace photographing at lunch time. I am also a creator of Lightroom and ACR presets, I really enjoy making editing easier and more streamlined for other photographers.
What ignited your passion for photography, and what fuels it now?
Like most photographers, I got into photography to document my oldest daughter's life. I got my first DSLR in 2009 (which I still use sometimes) and I have never looked back. My kids still fuel passion, although I can document their journey better now, my reason for picking up my camera is still the same.
What’s in your camera bag right now, what do use the most? the least? Canon 6d, Canon 35mm L and a Canon 28mm. I am adding a 15mm fisheye this week! I have a 50mm and an 85mm but to be honest they are at home collecting dust.
What’s your dream project or shoot?
Oh geez. I have so many dream projects!! I guess my ultimate project would either be a Twin Vaginal Birth or being invited to photograph one of my photography idols.
What is the biggest challenge you face as a photographer?
We are a military family so we tend to move around a bit. Once I get settled we are packing up to move to another state, we might only have 1.5 more years were we are now. Moving around is amazing but it's also tough because I can't establish a good client base and once I do we are packing up. However we have decided that Colorado will most likely be our forever home so even if we move away from here in 2 years, we will be back for good eventually.
If you had $500 to spend on photography...
How should you spend it? I should probably buy a nice back pack, replenish all my SD cards and get an external microphone for my camera
How do you wish you could spend it? I wish I could use it to add to my savings to upgrade my camera body.
How would you really spend it? Probably renewing my website and paying business bills.
Is there any one thing you wish someone had told you at the very
beginning of your photography journey? Don't be in such a rush. I probably shouldn't have even started taking clients for several years after I did. There is so much to learn so really take your time and get to know the in's and out's of your camera and the business side of photography.
